Since ancient times, people have deified the natural world, endowing its inhabitants with supernatural abilities. The behavior of animals was attributed to a connection with a series of events occurring in human daily life. However, the various signs were first acquired by those animals that could be domesticated, and only then did human eyes turn to their forest counterparts.

No less interesting is the meeting with the hare, which invariably served as a source of food and entertainment for the feudal lords who were lucky enough to have a forest on the territory of their estate.

As in the case of many other animals, meeting a hare can promise either the favor of fortune or its departure for a long time:
• If a person meets a hare running across a forest path, you should first of all notice its color. If its fur is white, it means that just as the hare senses the coming of cold weather, fate promises you a series of failures. But if the hare was dark in color, this is a sign of the favor of fortune. A gray hare promises the speedy fulfillment of a cherished desire.
• If a person encountered a hare at the exit from the house, our ancestors would say that this was a clear sign of the imminent death of a loved one.
• If you happen to see a hare on the road, not far from the locality where you live, you should be wary of a possible fire. This means there is a reason to check the wiring and all electrical appliances in the house.
• A hare crossing the road on the way of a wedding procession often foreshadows conflicts in family life and a subsequent coming divorce.
• Another trouble can be marked by a meeting of a pregnant woman with a hare, because it predicts a serious injury to the unborn baby, popularly called a harelip (cleft lip).

What does it mean if the hare is running towards you? Suppose that the long-eared messenger, having met a person, is not at all eager to escape, but jumps towards him. The sign warns: if you happen to see such a “brave” hare on the road, you should immediately find out if everything is okay with your loved ones. It is possible that someone needs emergency help right now.

A hare that crosses the path of a car may well end up under the wheels. Unfortunately, such a sign does not bode well for the driver. If you hit a hare, the signs say that you won’t see any luck for many years. If the hare cannot be saved, it should not be left to be torn by dogs and birds of prey; it is better to bury it in the ground and mentally ask for forgiveness.

The furry animal is careful; it does not enter human-inhabited territory unless necessary. But residents of rural areas sometimes see a hare in their garden or yard. The sign assures: if there is an unmarried girl or a bachelor guy in the house, they will soon meet their soul mate and get married.

Seeing a hare in a cemetery - what does such a sign mean? Why shouldn’t the hare wander into the churchyard, if it’s quiet, there are no dogs and there is lush grass? But there is a special sign in this regard: a hare that ran across the grave may be the soul of the deceased, who managed to temporarily return to the world of the living. There is no need to shout or try to catch up with the animal. It's best to just not draw attention to yourself.

Everyone must decide for themselves whether to believe in superstitions or not, but blaming this cute animal for all failures is extremely wrong. After all, if all encounters with a hares led to a ton of trouble, there would definitely be no hunters left in the world.
